Local History

The Victoria Park Local History Collection was established at the Library to preserve the history of the Town and to provide information relevant to the area. It is for reference only, ensuring all information is available at all times. You may photocopy information held in the collection.

What is in the collection? 

Books, newsletters, photographs, newspaper cuttings, maps, oral history interviews, microfiche records of local newspapers and rate books from 1898 to 1946. Your records, newsletters, photographs and publications for example, are all historically significant.

Can you help us?

To expand the collection we need copies of your family letters, photographs, documents diaries, cuttings and reminiscences of your life in the Town.

BEYOND MATTA GERUP

You can now purchase a copy of our latest publication 'Beyond Matta Gerup: a history of Victoria Park' by Susannah Thompson, from the library and administration building. This publication gives a narrative of the changing social landscape in Victoria Park, the story of its people, and how they have lived and worked in the district. Hard cover $44.95 and soft cover $24.94.

FAQ's

Does Local History keep old newspapers?

The Local History collection can provide access to the following local newspapers:

Southern Gazette - Victoria Park Edition in microfiche from 1986 to 2007. Print and online editions are available up to the current edition.

The Victoria Park Examiner – print editions

The public may view these newspapers; however it is important that a time is arranged with the Local History coordinator in advance.

How do I give to the collection?

Donations are very welcome, and a large part of the collection is made up of donated materials. To donate an item, make an appointment with the Local History Coordinator who will assess the item. You will be asked to fill in a form that gives permission to display and allow access to the item.

Do I need to know the background of materials that I donate?

It is important to provide as much information as possible about the item, so that its relevance to the collection and the Town may be determined.

Does Local History have audio histories?

There is a large collection of oral histories held in the Local History Collection. Transcripts of these may be read in the library. Copying of any material must comply with copyright regulations.
