2022 Sporting Walk of Fame - Nominations are open until 31 January 2022

The purpose of the Sporting Walk of Fame is to formally recognise and honour people who
have a strong connection to the Town of Victoria Park that have achieved sporting success at
an elite level or made significant contributions to the elite sporting arena.
  • This includes all people who have impacted positively in the realm of elite sport and were, for example, an individual athlete, team player, administrator, official, coach or umpire.
  • Inductions for the Sporting Walk of Fame (SWOF) take place every four years and paver for each inductee are currently featured at the entrance to the Aqualife Centre, Somerset Street, East Victoria Park and include the inductees’ name, chosen sport and date of induction.

Objectives

The objectives of the Sporting Walk of Fame are to:

  • Develop a tangible dedication to honour sports people who have brought pride to the
  • Town of Victoria Park by achieving success at an elite level and enhancing the sporting
  • experience for all.
  • Celebrate the past achievements of local sports heroes.
  • Provide inspiration and role models to local residents, particularly juniors.
  • Generate a positive opportunity for regional recognition and promote the Town as a
  • foundation for sporting legends.
  • Create a valuable record of social history.

 

Selection Panel

All nominations received by the closing date will be assessed against the Eligibility Criteria and conditions.

The selection panel may seek further information if necessary.

The Selection Panel for the Sporting Walk of Fame will comprise of Elected Members,

Administration staff and community representatives.

Categories

There are two separate categories eligible for nomination:

  • Category A: Sports Competitor (eg. elite athlete, sportsperson)
  • Category B: Sports Contributor (eg. official, administrator or coach at an elite level)

The term ‘elite’ used in the Principle Criteria includes:

  • Participation in the Summer or Winter Olympic Games, Paralympics or
  • Commonwealth Games.
  • Success at National or World championships.
  • Held an Australian or World Title.
  • Excelled at the highest possible level in their chosen recognised sport.

Note: Long-term service to a sport at a non-elite level is not sufficient in itself to be eligible.

Criteria for Category A (Sports Competitor)

  1. The Nominees must have directly competed/contributed at an elite level or demonstrated achievement at an elite level in their chosen sport(s). Achievements in sport without the element of competition must be exceptional to be considered.
  2. The Nominee must agree to the nomination by completing an Agreement to Nomination Form (available here(PDF, 114KB)). This should be submitted with the nomination form.
  3. Posthumous nominations will be considered, so long as the nomination is supported by next of kin by completing an Agreement to Nomination Form.
  4. Nominees are deemed eligible if they:
    • Were nurtured for a significant time in their sporting career whilst a resident; and/or
    • Were a member of a sporting association/club or school in the Town that significantly impacted on learning their skills to reach an elite level;  and/or
    • Resided in the Town or actively belonged to a relevant sporting club at the time of their sporting prominence; and/or 
    • Developed a significant amount of their sporting or sports contribution skills in the Town 
  5. Additional to elite sporting achievements or contributions, the Selection Panel will consider nominees based on integrity, sportsmanship and character.
  6. The Nominee must have officially retired from participation/contribution at the elite level in the sport for which they are nominated.
  7. The Nominee can have participated in their sport in a paid or voluntary capacity.
  8. At least one letter of support should be included with the nomination, preferably from a current State Sporting Association (if one exists).
  9. The same person may be nominated for both categories.
  10. Inductees will only be drawn from sports achievements/contributions in recognised sports (as listed by the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries or Sport Australia). Please note that ‘Open Categories’ i.e. open to contestants regardless of their professional or amateur status are not eligible for nomination.
  11. Organisations, groups and business entities are not eligible for nomination.
  12. Nominations can be made by any individual (including the Nominee) or organisation, including submissions from the Town of Victoria Park.
  13. The Town of Victoria Park reserves the right to deem an inductee ineligible or remove an existing member from the Sporting Walk of Fame (SWOF) if it is considered that person’s conduct was detrimental to the Town’s public profile or objectives of the SWOF.
  14. The decision of the Town of Victoria Park is final, and no appeal can be made against those decisions, nor shall any correspondence be entered into.
  15. Any canvassing of Elected Members or staff with the view to influencing acceptance of a nomination will deem the nomination ineligible.

Criteria for Category B (Sports Contributor)

  1. The Candidate must have positively influenced elite sport in areas other than direct participation such as an administrator, official, coach or umpire.
  2. The Nominee must agree to the nomination by completing an Agreement to Nomination Form (available here(PDF, 114KB)). This should be submitted with the nomination form.
  3. Posthumous nominations will be considered, so long as the nomination is supported by next of kin by completing an Agreement to Nomination Form.

Key Dates

Every four years, new inductees and guests will be invited to the Sporting Walk of Fame function hosted by the Town.

This event provides an opportunity to celebrate local sporting contributions and unveil the pavers in the Sporting Walk of Fame at the Town of Victoria Park Aqualife Centre. The achievements of inductees will be recognised, and sporting contributions formally acknowledged. 

Key dates are:

  • 1 November 2021 - Nominations open
  • 31 January 2022 - Nominations close
  • May 2022 - Launch event with guests, inductees and their families held (date to be advised)
