Signs on thoroughfares

Overview

The Town of Victoria Park encourages the promotion of businesses within the perimeters of the Town by the use of signs, however there a few requirements that need to be met so that they don't cause a hazard or annoyance to residents, other businesses and visitors.

There are three types of signs that are commonly used in the Town.

  • Portable direction sign - a portable, free-standing direction sign.
  • Portable sign - a portable, free-standing advertising sign.
  • Portable real estate direction sign - a portable, free-standing sign advertising a home open.

Portable signs

Portable signs require a permit, in accordance with the Town’s local laws.

The Town does allow one portable advertising sign per premises without a permit if it does not exceed one metre in height or one square metre in area. It must be placed or erected outside a business to draw attention to it during the opening hours of that business. It cannot be erected:

  • over any footpath where the resulting vertical clearance between the sign and the footpath is less than 2.5 metres
  • on a round-a-bout
  • on a median strip or traffic island
  • in any other location where, in the opinion of the local government, the sign is likely to obstruct lines of sight along a thoroughfare
  • on any natural feature, including a rock or tree
  • on a thoroughfare
  • on a power or light pole, traffic light, road nameplate post or road traffic sign
  • on any bridge or structural approaches to a bridge.
