Town's Good Day Out nominated for Event of the Year

The Town of Victoria Park’s 2016 Good Day Out event, focused entirely on sustainable best practice, has been nominated by Parks & Leisure Australia for Western Australia’s Event of the Year.

The award is designed to recognise the combined effort required to successfully plan, organise and manage an effective event which promotes and enhances leisure time for a number of social and environmental benefits to the community.

Town of Victoria Park Mayor, Trevor Vaughan, said he was very proud of the Town’s commitment to sustainability and was thrilled the event had been nominated for such a big award.

“The Good Day Out showcased the Town as a leader in events and creative vibrancy, while meeting community enrichment objectives through various event components including children’s entertainment, sustainability speakers, interactive family friendly workshops, the provision of stalls for businesses and community groups, and the sale of second hand items,” said Mayor Trevor Vaughan.

“The Town collaborated on the event with local organisations passionate about sustainability and the depth of this event wouldn’t have been possible without their contribution.

“We’re going up against some big and very established events which were also nominated including City of Mandurah’s Crabfest, the Annual Summer of Fun event hosted by the Town of Cambridge, City of Joondalup’s Kaleidoscope Festival and City of Stirling’s Summerset Arts Festival, said the Mayor.

“Delivering an event where only two bins of rubbish were required for waste for the duration of the event is an absolutely outstanding achievement.”

Sustainability, reducing waste and being more ethically aware are key objectives for the Town and its residents. The organising committee, which was made up of Town officers and community members, used the event to leverage information, initiate behavioural change in residents and show a completely different and unique way to run an event. It will be used as a benchmark to deliver future green events.

The Event of the Year announcement will take place at Parks and Leisure Australia’s Awards of Excellence on Friday 16 June.
