At the Ordinary Council Meeting on 11 September, Council voted to allow the Department of Education to demolish the existing kindergarten building located on lots 593-596 (No.6-8) Planet Street Carlisle to allow room for two more transportable classrooms, three sheds and a small office, and an extended play space for children.

Demolition of the building is expected to take place during the September/October school holidays, pending completion of the approvals process. If for any reason approvals are not obtained before the upcoming school holidays, demolition will occur in the summer school holidays, ensuring no risk or disruption to students or staff.

In November 2017, Council leased the site to the Department of Education for an initial term of five years with the option to extend for a further five years.

The decision to lease the land to the Department of Education was made to alleviate student accommodation pressures being experienced due to increasing student enrolments across the Town.

The Department of Education has been using the site to provide early childhood education to students enrolled at Victoria Park Primary School through the use of temporary transportable classrooms.

The existing building located at the site was built in the 1960s and was used as a classroom between the 1980s until 2010. The building has been vacant since January 2017 and has been deemed non-compliant for educational purposes due to the presence of asbestos. Recently a sinkhole has opened, believed to be caused by the old septic system attached to the building. The building has been fenced off and unused since the Department of Education took over the lease of the site.

The cost of redeveloping the building to meet code compliant legislation is cost prohibitive, and its removal would allow the space for more children to be educated and more space for them to play.
