Vic Park business looking after the community

Published on 30 June 2020

Bart Mahat and the team at Threepence Café and Bakery in East Victoria Park have been helping out those who have been doing it tough during the coronavirus pandemic.

Over the last few months the café has been donating a free meal each week to a family who has been impacted in the local area.

Bart says he was inspired by a local customer to begin the project.

"A regular customer came in and apologised for not coming in daily. I was very shocked for even the gesture of telling me this. He said, 'I lost my job due to COVID-19 so I can’t afford to buy coffee daily. I’m stressed and don’t even know if I can pay the rent'. That kind of started my journey to helping the community."

Bart said the experience of donating meals to the community has been amazing. He mentioned other local businesses and both loyal and new customers have jumped on board to donate money and gifts to support the community as well.

The café is calling for people to nominate a household who have undergone recent hardship. Nominations can be made by emailing bart@threepence.com.au.

Threepence Café and Bakery have been open since 2017 and are located at 935 Albany Highway, East Victoria Park. They pride themselves on their coffee and simple but fulfilling breakfast foods. Visit their Facebook page here.
