G’day, I’m Gregor Wilson. I’ve been with the Town since April 2008, and I’m currently the Manager of Infrastructure Operations. I work out of the Depot, overseeing Fleet, Waste, Parks, and Engineering maintenance. Basically, if it’s outdoors and part of the Town – roads, footpaths, parks, vehicles – my team’s either installing it or keeping it in good nick.
I came on board after a promotion from my previous supervisor role. I’d worked in bigger councils before, but I was keen for a bit more variety – and I wasn’t wrong. The smaller scale here means you get to wear a few hats, which keeps things interesting.
When I first started, I was out of my comfort zone after 12 years in my last job. But the crew here were welcoming and keen to make things better. We made a few changes early on, got a good response, and I knew I’d landed somewhere solid.
One of the biggest challenges has always been resourcing – we run lean. But that’s made us adaptable. We’ve learnt to prioritise, work together, and build realistic schedules around what we can actually deliver. Knowing our agreed level of service helps keep things on track.
I’ve had chances to move on over the years, but the culture and flexibility here have kept me around. When life’s thrown curveballs, the Town’s been supportive – and that means a lot. I’ve seen it firsthand.
What I really appreciate is the freedom to try new things. We’ve had a few wild ideas – like the Cockitrough – and instead of getting shut down, we’ve been backed. That little idea’s now in over 130 spots across WA.
Over the years, I’ve worked in five different roles across three areas – from Parks to Engineering, Fleet, Waste, and Assets. I’ve even stepped up to Chief level when needed. It’s given me a solid understanding of how everything fits together.
I reckon our team plays a big part in shaping the Town. We’ve delivered some cracking projects – GO Edwards Park upgrades, streetscapes, the Urban Forest Strategy, and heaps of POS work. Seeing those outdoor spaces improve over time is what gets me excited about the future.
