Hey, I’m Orlarne – I’ve been working as a Youth Programs Officer at the Town since March 2024, and honestly, it’s been such a good fit for me.
I work with young people to make sure their voices are heard and actually considered in the decisions we make. It’s not just about ticking boxes – it’s about creating real spaces where they feel seen, supported, and like they belong.
I first got involved through the Young Leaders program and just loved being part of this community. The people here are genuinely lovely, and the role fit perfectly with where I was at in life – still studying at uni, managing ADHD and chronic illness, and needing a workplace that gets that flexibility matters. I’ve been trusted to manage my time and work in ways that support my health, and that’s helped me not just survive, but actually thrive.
One of the moments I knew I was in the right place? When I realised I could make a mistake or ask for help without feeling like the world was going to end. That, and David’s cooking – game changer.
Of course, there are challenges. Sometimes things move slower than I’d like, or I’m trying to work within systems that weren’t built with young people in mind. But I’ve learned that building strong relationships, staying creative, and making small shifts from the inside can lead to meaningful change – even if it’s quiet.
The culture here is something special. Everyone’s passionate, supportive, and genuinely cares. I’ve felt like I can show up as myself, be honest about what I need, and still do my best work. I’ve grown heaps – in confidence, clarity, and creativity – and I’ve learned how to work with my brain instead of against it.
Looking ahead, I’m excited to keep amplifying youth voices and building spaces that are bold, welcoming, and led by community. There’s so much potential here, and I’m keen to see where it all leads – both for the Town and for my own career journey.
