Communications and Engagement Coordinator

Hi, I’m Simon Duffecy, and I’ve been the Coordinator of Communications and Engagement at the Town since May 2021.

In local government, comms is about more than just bin days – though yes, that’s part of it. It’s also about tackling big-picture challenges like encouraging people to drive less, care more for the environment, shop local, and get involved in their community. It’s strategic, creative, and deeply connected to the people we serve.

I joined the Town because I was offered the chance to lead a team and help shape a new culture. The area itself was a drawcard too – vibrant places, a progressive Council, and a community that genuinely cares. From day one, I was trusted with real responsibility and autonomy. No micromanagement, just the space to get on with the work – and that’s when I knew I’d made the right move.

We’re a small local government with big ambitions and limited resources, which can be a challenge. But that’s also what makes it exciting. Constraints force creativity, and I love the constant puzzle of finding the most value with what we’ve got.

The Town’s flexibility and meaningful work align perfectly with where I’m at in life. I’m your classic Vic Park local – early 30s, first home buyer, no kids, and a puppy. It’s a lifestyle that fits, and I get to see the impact of our work in the community every day.

What I appreciate most about the culture here is the collaboration and agility. We’re empowered to make decisions quickly and try new things. That freedom has helped me grow a lot – especially in terms of self-confidence and leadership.

Comms is seen as a strategic tool here, not just a support function. That means my team plays a real role in helping projects succeed and making sure our work connects with the community in meaningful ways.

Looking ahead, I’m excited by the constant stream of new challenges. No two days are the same, and that’s exactly how I like it.
