Urban Ecosystems Supervisor

Hi, I’m Stephen Szydlowski, and I’ve been with the Town of Victoria Park since Australia Day, 2009. I’m the Urban Ecosystems Supervisor, which means I spend my days protecting and restoring the natural bushland and green spaces that make this place special – areas like Jirdarup and Hillview Bushland, and the landscapes that support our Urban Forest Strategy.

What brought me here was a genuine passion for serving the community. I’ve always believed that public green spaces aren’t just nice to have – they’re essential to our quality of life. Being able to contribute to that, day in and day out, is something I take great pride in.

There was a moment early on – mist hanging over GO Edwards Park, birds gathering in the quiet – when I realised just how much I enjoy this work. It’s not just about plants and planning; it’s about connection. To nature, to community, and to something bigger than yourself.

Of course, there are challenges. Balancing community expectations with the realities of public service isn’t always straightforward. But I’ve learnt to approach things with empathy – understanding that everyone sees the world from their own perspective. That mindset helps me navigate the tough stuff, one step at a time.

At this stage in life, my values have shifted. I’m less focused on material things and more driven by purpose. The work I do – creating urban ecosystems, fostering biodiversity, and building spaces people can enjoy – aligns perfectly with that.

What I appreciate most about the Town is the culture. It’s respectful, collaborative, and genuinely supportive. Over the years, I’ve grown into a leadership role that’s not just about managing tasks, but about encouraging others to bring their best.

My role contributes directly to the Town’s Urban Forest Strategy, but it’s more than just planting trees. It’s about building relationships, fostering stewardship, and creating spaces that will serve generations to come.

Looking ahead, I’m excited by the unexpected opportunities that keep coming my way – projects that have conservation value not just here in Vic Park, but across the state and beyond. It’s a privilege to be part of something that matters.
