Urban Forest at Home plant giveaway

Our popular annual Urban Forest at Home plant giveaway returns in 2024, offering residents free tree seedlings and shrubs, many of which have been propagated from Jirdarup Bushland in Kensington to encourage endemic species to 'jump the fence' and increase biodiversity across the Town.

This year's plant giveaway will be held on Saturday 25 May from 9am-2.30pm at the Town Depot, 199 Star Street, Welshpool. Online orders are scheduled to open on 25 April until sold out.

Community Planting Days

Each year, the Town runs community planting days as part of the Urban Forest Strategy. Taking place during our planting season, which runs from June to September, we tackle new locations each time in line with our planting schedule and invite community members to join us in investing in our future urban forest canopy and understorey.

Our 2024 planting season includes two community planting days – circle the below dates and keep an eye out for full details coming soon.

Sunday 7 July: at the intersection of Bone Street and Upton Street in St James, in celebration of NAIDOC Week.

Sunday 28 July: at Hayman Road for National Tree Planting Day.

WA Tree Festival

Events will be popping up across the state from 6 April - 5 May for the fast-growing WA Tree Festival – a collaboration between WA Local Governments to raise awareness of and community involvement in our urban forests.

This year, we're hosting Noongar story time at the library and Friends of Jirdarup are running a guided bushwalk through our beautiful Jirdarup Bushland.

Street Trees

Keen to embrace our urban forest and request a street tree this planting season?

Each year, our Leafy Streets program runs during planting season (June to September), where we identify verges for planting and give residents a choice of tree to add to their verge.

We also welcome resident-led interest in having a verge tree planted and will consider requests on a case-by-case basis.

Street tree planting requests can be made all year around, with the cut-off date at the end of February for tree planting in the same year. Requests made after February will be included in the following planting season.
