Plays a leading role in encouraging a coordinated response to the implementation of the state government's policy priorities for seniors. The Department's vision is a state where all West Australians can age well in communities where they matter, belong and contribute. The Department undertakes the following activities to help community and business partners achieve this vision.

WA Seniors Card

This program is for people who are aged 61 years or above, a permanent resident of Western Australia and work less than 25 hours per week, averaged over a 12 month period.  A full set of terms and conditions apply to obtaining a WA Seniors Card.

Sport and recreation

Supports the development of a sustainable and diverse sport and recreation industry in WA.  Being active in your older years can have great health benefits. It helps maintain friendships and means you're an active and connected part of the community. The Department has an extensive list of WA Clubs that can be accessed through the club search data base that is accessed via the website.

Council for The Aged WA (COTA WA)

Works towards an equitable, just and inclusive society in which older people can flourish.  The Council crystallised the founding principal of valuing the contribution and lived experience of older people and the advance the rights, needs and interests of older Western Australians. 

COTA WA is involved in the senior’s housing strategy and has been instrumental in the formation of many incorporated bodies dealing with health, wellbeing and housing such as Residential Aged Care Association, WA Carers Association, Seniors Week and WA community home care services group.  COTA WA currently run programmes in the areas of:

  • crime prevention and seniors safety
  • consumer directed Care peer education
  • seniors week awards and grants
  • active ageing incorporating Living Longer Living stronger and computer classes.

Seniors Recreation Council WA

Aim to support the establishment of new groups wishing to provide active recreation for the over 50s and provide advice to the community where required.  The council continues to develop and implement a number of innovative programs to foster the participation of people over 50 in sport and physical and mental activity through a range of initiatives such as Have a Go Days, country forums and seminars, LiveLighter Aged Care Games, Add Life to Your Years Directory, Branch Network, new club development, volunteer education, LiveLighter seniors activity/information days, exergaming and tech savvy seniors have made a difference to the lives, lifestyle and wellbeing of persons over 50 in WA.

The Senior (Newspaper)

Delivers news and views to Australia’s rapidly-growing senior population through the six state newspapers – The Senior NSW/ACT, The Senior Victoria, The Senior Queensland, The Senior Western Australia, The Senior South Australia and The Senior Tasmania – they keep mature Australians informed about the issues that matter to them.
