From October 2021 to April 2022, the Town will transform Etwell Street between Riverview Road and Northampton Street into a vibrant local hub connecting local businesses and the community.

The concept design for the revitalisation was developed in close collaboration with local residents, business owners, elected members and subject matter experts from the Town, and aims to create a meaningful and vibrant local centre.

Key features of the project include a unique curved road to slow traffic, more shade and greenery for pedestrians, public art and two separate public spaces for local events.

As part of the Town’s Uban Forest Strategy, approximately 39 new trees will be added to the area.

The Etwell Street Local Centre Revitalisation is fully funded by the Federal Department of Infrastructure, under Phase 2 of the Local Roads & Community Infrastructure Program.

Progress of works

To date, the following works have been delivered:

  • Construction of new brick paved footpaths, crossovers and al fresco areas
  • Construction of new kerbs and realigned parking bays
  • Installation of new street furniture and construction of new bus stop
  • Below ground works to install irrigation and power cabling
  • Planting and mulching

Unfortunately, the Town's contractors experienced a number of issues over the summer months that caused the original delivery timeframe to be extended.

Due to Western Power scheduling, underground power cannot be installed at the project site until late 2022. The Town cannot install the new street lights until the underground power works are carried out, so this section of the project will be delayed until the NRUPP works are complete.

To ensure that the underground power works can take place later this year with as little disruption as possible, all below ground power works have already been completed.

Latest update

In April 2022, tree plantings, finishing touches and tidying up of the roundabouts was carried out, with the final roundabout plantings to be completed when the irrigation system is connected by Western Power in June.

Final road markings are being applied this month ahead of our launch event – keep an eye out on our channels for more details coming soon.
