How to vote

Please note, rolls have now closed for the 2023 Local Government elections.

Voting in a local government election is not compulsory in WA. However, all electors are strongly encouraged to vote. Here's how:

Look out for your Voting Package in the mail

Local government elections are conducted by a postal ballot. All electors will receive a postal voting package in the mail that includes:

  • a ballot paper and candidates’ statements
  • an envelope for the ballot papers
  • a return paid envelope
  • a brochure from the electoral commission detailing how to vote.

Electors will start receiving their voting packages from 20 of September 2023 in their letterbox. Voting packages will be in an envelope from the Western Australian Electoral Commission (WAEC) and addressed directly to the elector.

Complete your vote

As part of State Government reforms, there will be a change from first-past-the-post system of voting to optional preferential voting (OPV) for the October 2023 local government elections.

This might all sound a bit technical, but the change brings local government elections back in line with State and Federal elections and restores the right of electors to express preferences.

The change will result in making council more representative and responsive to ratepayers.

How to vote is really easy and it is all about choices — your choices.

Imagine there are 3 candidates 🧕👩👴

You can:

1️⃣ Vote for just 1 candidate — just put a number 1 next to the name of that candidate

2️⃣ Vote for some — just put a 1 next to the name of the candidate you like best and a 2 next to your second choice.

3️⃣ Vote for all — put a 1 in the box for the candidate you like best and then a 2 for your second choice and a 3 for your third choice. If there are more candidates, you just keep numbering if you want to.

How easy is that?

Return your vote

If returning your voting package by post, ensure you mail it by 16 October 2023. After this date, ensure your vote is counted by bringing it into the Town of Victoria Park Admin Centre
