Join Councillor Emily Wilding in conversation on the avenues for LGBTQIA+ advocacy in Local Government, the importance of being involved in your local community, and why you should involve yourself in the decision-making mechanisms that impact your life. Emily will discuss the importance of representation (at all levels!), what local governments do, the decision-making process and how you can influence it, and the benefits of being involved in your community.
In the second part of the session join local artist FRANK and learn how to screen print your own merch! All printing materials will be provided, just bring your garments of choice, your awesome attitude and be ready for the fun!

About Emily Wilding
A 28-year-old Local Government Councillor and youth worker from Perth, with a background in community services and advocacy. Elected to the Town of Bassendean in 2021, she became the youngest woman elected to the Town, as well as one of only a handful of transgender elected representatives across the country. She has provided lived experience advice and policy guidance to the Mental Health Commission of Western Australia, and currently coordinates a youth services team for a large local government district. She lives in Bassendean with her wife and 2 mischievous cocker spaniels.
About FRANK
Influenced by the current political climate, popular culture, and the environment, FRANK channels relentless energy into a growing body of work that is deliberate and honest, balancing the in-your-face narratives with graphic swag. With a heady blend of print collage, mixed media, aerosol and acrylic FRANK reappropriates the repetitive vibe of commercial printmaking to explore themes of environmental injustices, politics and pop culture iconography. A subversive, at times cheeky, artist, FRANK has a preoccupation with the tension between the individual creative process and machinal production techniques.
About Advocacy & Arts
A FREE program of workshops for young people that combines LGBTQIA+ advocacy with the arts. Over six workshops across August to October, learn practical approaches to LGBTQIA+ leadership and allyship and make something arty. It’s crafty and educational!
These workshops are designed for younger folks, ages 16–26.
Advocacy & Arts is presented by the Town of Victoria Park in partnership with Youth Affairs Council of Western Australia (YACWA) and Victoria Park Community Centre.
