A message from Mayor Karen Vernon: Perth Invasion Day rally

Last week, our Mindeera Advisory Group held its first meeting for the year. Members shared their deep concerns and reflections about the impacts of the alleged terrorist attack at Perth’s Invasion Day rally last month.

Mindeera Advisory Group Chairperson Roni Gray Forrest said: “For us Noongar people this felt deeply personal. Incidents like this can heighten our feelings of vulnerability and grief. As a result of that incident, I don’t feel safe in our community, especially at large gatherings of Aboriginal people anymore. It’s important our community responds with care – by listening and standing alongside First Nations people in meaningful ways. By calling it out - we need leaders and allies to stand up to the scourge of racism which is stifling our communities! We are better than that!”

We know this incident has caused distress for many people in our community and beyond, particularly Noongar and other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Everyone has the right to feel safe in public places.

The Town of Victoria Park is committed to being a safe and welcoming place for all. We will not tolerate violence, racism, hate or discrimination in any form. We will continue working closely with our local Noongar community and all residents to build a community grounded in respect, understanding and mutual care.
