Bin Tagging launches in our Town next week

The Town is rolling out bin tagging, an education-focused waste initiative designed to help residents sort their household waste more accurately and reduce contamination in kerbside collections.

Bin tagging is a long-running, state government-funded program delivered by local governments. Waste Education Officers visit residential bins on collection days and conduct a quick and non-intrusive check of contents, leaving a helpful tag that provides simple feedback on how well residents are sorting their waste — helping households understand what should — and shouldn’t — go in each bin.

The program will run for six weeks, from 16 February to 30 March 2026. Only around 10% of household bins are selected, no personal details are recorded, and there are there are no fines or penalties.

The tags include positive reinforcement for properly sorted bins, as well as helpful guidance on common errors to reduce recycling and organics contamination. This approach supports residents to sort their waste correctly by clarifying bin use in real time.

Bin tagging has been shown to:

  • Improve recycling rates by up to 25%: Tagging gives immediate feedback that can correct sorting habits
  • Reduce contamination by up to 60%: Clear guidance helps decrease the amount of incorrect items in recycling and FOGO bins, which improves material recovery and lowers processing costs
  • Provide education: Visual feedback encourages learning and greater understanding of local waste rules.

The Town is also offering an incentive, with households that correctly sort their waste going in the draw to win weekly $50 vouchers and a $200 overall prize.
