The Town of Victoria Park will plant 869 new street trees across local streets this winter as part of its popular Leafy Streets program.
Planting will begin at the end of June and continue through to mid-July, helping to make neighbourhoods greener, cooler and more attractive.
Mayor Karen Vernon said the program was one of the Town's most visible and successful initiatives of the Town’s internationally recognised and award-winning Urban Forest Strategy.
“People tell us they love living in leafy streets, and every year the Leafy Streets program helps make that a reality for more residents,” Mayor Vernon said.
“More trees mean more shade on hot days, greener neighbourhoods and better habitats for birds and wildlife. It's one of the simplest ways we can improve our local environment and make our streets more enjoyable places to live.”
Property owners adjacent to proposed planting locations have been contacted and invited to choose from a selection of tree species suited to their street.
Mayor Vernon said residents value trees and the difference they make, so giving a choice helped create a sense of ownership while supporting the Town's goal of increasing tree cover.
“Whether it's providing shade for people walking to school or work, cooling our streets during summer or simply making a neighbourhood look more welcoming, these trees will benefit the community for many years to come,” she said,
The Leafy Streets program is an integral part of helping to increase tree cover across the Town.
Residents will receive further information about the planting program throughout June. More information, including frequently asked questions and details on how to provide feedback, can be found on the Town's Leafy Streets webpage below.
