Town calls for speedy approval of landfill works

The Town of Victoria Park is calling on the State Government to fast-track approval for key works needed for environmentally responsible management of the Tamala Park landfill in the lead up to its estimated closure in 2028-29 when it is expected to reach maximum capacity.

The landfill is run by Mindarie Regional Council on behalf of seven local governments including the Town of Victoria Park.

Mayor Karen Vernon said the Town remains committed to diverting waste from landfill and supports the closure of the Tamala Park landfill in accordance with its licence, but important work must happen first to help protect the environment.

In mid-2025, Mindarie Regional Council applied for approval from the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation (DWER) to carry out essential pre-closure works that will help manage leachate – the liquid that forms when water moves through waste – and allow the site to operate up to its final capacity within its existing landfill footprint.

“Transitioning away from landfill waste management is a long-term plan for the Town and MRC, but we need to make sure the right work is done before that happens. If we get this wrong, the risks and costs could be much higher for our community in the years ahead,” Mayor Vernon said.

At its June meeting, Council unanimously supported the landfill’s planned closure in accordance with best environmental practice when it reaches its maximum capacity in 2028–29 and approved advocacy to the Minister for the Environment and DWER to expedite the approval.

Mayor Vernon said delays could make it harder and more costly to manage the landfill site before and after it closes.

“This isn't about extending the life of the landfill, it's about making sure we can close it properly. We want a safe closure, less risk to the environment and a clear path forward,” Mayor Vernon said.

Mayor Vernon and Chief Executive Officer Carl Askew will seek to meet with the Minister for Environment and the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation to advocate for a swift decision.
