Town’s response to FOGO system challenges in South West WA

Published on Tuesday, 9 September 2025 at 5:30:50 PM

Recent media reports suggest that Councils in the South West are considering scrapping FOGO collections due to high levels of contamination and a lack of local FOGO processing options.  The Town of Victoria Park’s new FOGO collection contract provides for our organic waste to be processed through Western Metropolitan Regional Council (WMRC) in Shenton Park.

Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) is a vital initiative that transforms food and garden waste into nutrient-rich compost, reducing waste sent to landfill, supporting a circular economy and lowering carbon emissions.

“We are committed to supporting our community to successfully adopt FOGO as part of Council’s broader sustainability and waste reduction strategy. Our waste calendar, educational materials, and customer service support are tailored to guide residents through the transition and help them to minimise contamination rates,” said Mayor Karen Vernon.

WMRC has demonstrated reliability and capability in managing FOGO for other metropolitan local governments, and will the Town will work closely with them to ensure long-term processing solutions continue to be available.

The Town is proud to be delivering FOGO through a staged rollout, with Phase 1 successfully completed in August and Phase 2 set to begin in November 2025. This phased rollout ensures that operational logistics, community education, and bin infrastructure are delivered effectively and equitably across our community.

We acknowledge that the rollout of any new system comes with challenges. However, the Town remains confident in our community’s willingness to embrace FOGO. We are committed to continuous improvement and transparency, and we welcome constructive dialogue with other local governments and the State Government to strengthen organics recovery opportunities across WA.
