Vic Park urges EPA to review Burswood Park redevelopment

The Town of Victoria Park has urged the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) to undertake a Public Environmental Review (PER) of the proposed Perth Entertainment and Sporting Precinct (PESP), citing concerns about significant environmental and social impacts of the PESP.

The Town made its submissions this week during the 7 day public consultation period, calling on the EPA to assess the development, and to do so at the highest level of scrutiny available, which is the PER.

“Given the EPA conducted a PER on other motorsports developments in WA such as Kwinana, Collie and Keysbrook, the EPA must conduct a PER on Burswood Park for consistency and to ensure public trust in the integrity of environmental review processes” said Mayor Vernon.

The Town’s submissions highlighted:

  • The potential impacts on Social Surroundings, including noise, amenity, and cultural values; and
  • The environmental factors impacting the land, water, flora and fauna, particularly given the complex history of industrial use and waste disposal on this site in the past.

Despite the WA Government’s push to fast-track this project, reportedly to meet contractual obligations with Supercars Australia, the Town believes the scale, intensity and sensitivity of the development proposal demands more deliberate planning, and an intentionally robust environmental review process.

“The referral documents provided to the EPA attempt to exclude or minimise the environmental and social risks, but they have significant limitations and are based on many assumptions without proper modelling or scientific studies., The EPA has rarely used the PER pathway in recent years, but this is the kind of project that warrants it.” Mayor Vernon said
