Fuel load and fire break rules will go back into effect from 1 November through to 30 April.
The Town, like all other councils, is subject to the Bush Fires Act 1954 which means all businesses and residents must abide by restrictions over the warmer months to limit the risk of fire.
Bush fires can happen anywhere, even in suburban areas. It's important to understand the risks that affect you, and your responsibilities to mitigate them during bushfire season:
- Reduce your fuel load - Grass fires can start easily, keep your grass height under 50mm.
- Follow burn-off restrictions - see information further down this page.

Be aware of your surroundings - Our parks staff are out and about, but they can't be everywhere all the time. Help us keep an eye out for risks in our parks and reserves.
Your responsibilities at home
Maintain a 3m-wide and 3m-high firebreak immediately inside all external boundaries of the land. Firebreaks to a minimum 3m wide and 3m high are also to be cleared immediately surrounding all buildings situated on the land; and any place where inflammable liquids and gas products are kept. This includes the removal of rubbish and discarded materials by means other than burning off.
Remove inflammable matter from all of the lands, except living trees, shrubs, plants under cultivation and lawn, by means of rubbish removal, ploughing, cultivating or slashing to a height of no more than 50mm. Do not remove materials by burning off.
Prohibited and Restricted Burning Times
In addition to managing fuel loads, the Town also runs prohibited and restricted burning periods, as detailed below.
Prohibited Burning Times: 15 December to 31 March.
Restricted Burning Times (Permit Required): 2 November – 14 December and 1 – 30 April.
Penalties apply if the above conditions are breached.
No burning is permitted during the prohibited burning times, there are no exceptions made during this period.
