The McCallum Park and Taylor Reserve site is set against the backdrop of the Derbal Yerrigan (Swan River), with popular cycle and pedestrian paths, wide open grassed areas, and a plethora of mature leafy trees and plants.
The McCallum Park and Taylor Reserve Master Plan aims to create a vision for new high-quality spaces within the area, connect the parkland and the river, and create a destination for locals and the broader community.
Since the Master Plan was originally developed in 2017 by the Town and the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions' Riverbank Program, the area has undergone significant development. Some works surrounding the parklands have been delivered in a staged approach, like the McCallum Park Active Area, and new projects, such as the Boorloo Bridge, have been completed which were not part of the original Master Plan.
A review and update of the 2017 Master Plan is now being undertaken to encompass the development at the site, and further incorporate the potential daylighting of Mindeera Spring.
Mindeera Spring was discovered running through an underground drainage system within the parkland area. The Town is now investigating the feasibility of daylighting Mindeera Spring, with an option to turn one of the underground drains in McCallum Park into an open 'living stream', with native plants and treatments to help improve the water quality and habitat for local wildlife. Further, daylighting Mindeera Spring recognises the significant First Nations cultural heritage of the area, as well as the flora and fauna within.
The Town is now seeking community feedback to help shape the updated Master Plan and ensure it reflects our community's vision and priorities for the parkland area. Feedback can be given by:
