Summer update – John Macmillan Park

Published on Wednesday, 6 December 2023 at 1:53:00 PM

With the arrival of summer and the anticipated corresponding increase in patronage of John Macmillan Park, the Town has been working with local stakeholders to put measures in place so our community can enjoy the space safely.

(For info on the Town’s collective impact approach to antisocial behaviour in the park, see our previous update).

Measures being taken in the park and surrounding precinct in the coming months include:

  • Dedication of increased WA Police resources to the precinct via a targeted operation.
  • Continued community outreach via attendance to the park by our newly appointed i24s outreach team (recently taking over from RooForce).
  • Continued security presence at the Victoria Park Library adjoining the park (Wed, Thurs, Fri afternoon / evenings).
  • Regular patrols by Town Rangers (note Rangers do not possess the law enforcement powers of Police. To see what our Rangers do for the community click here).
  • Regular cleaning and maintenance of the park.
  • Further investigation of advanced CCTV that can yield actionable footage for Police.
  • Exploration of Liquor accords and working more closely with our local liquor outlets.
  • Encouragement of more bookings and events to be held at the park to activate the space for the community.

Further to the last point, Council recently approved a plan to provide hire of John Macmillan Park to the community free of charge as an incentive to boost organised usage of the area. Events already taking place in the park include:

  • Fusion Perth’s weekly afternoon Youth Hub during school term
  • Rotary’s Vic Park Markets on Sundays
  • The Town’s Summer Conversation event to positively activate the park and engage with community (7 Dec)
  • The Town’s Twilight Soiree event as part of Fringe

If you or someone you know would like to hire the park for activities, programs or an event, please fill out the form here

If you see something, say something

While the Town and other stakeholders are doing what we can to improve safety, in order for WA Police to prioritise their responses to antisocial behaviour in the John Macmillan precinct, it is very important that reports are made to Police. If you witness anti-social behaviour, please call Police on 131 444 (or 000 for life-threatening emergencies).

If you discover infrastructure issues needing maintenance or the attention of the Town, please submit a service request via this website, or call 9311 8111 during business hours (9311 8181 after hours).
